Chapter Nine

“No!” Isabeau yelled from where she was perched at the top of a tree. She had been less than pleased about being informed she would not be joining us on the cave adventure. We’d all anticipated her being angry about being sent home; what we had not anticipated was her leaping ten feet straight up onto a branch and quickly climbing to the top of a tree. Elisa had been trying to talk her down for the past five minutes after Misha had teleported up to where Isabeau was sitting and attempted to grab her. He was sporting a split lip and a black eye although it was rapidly healing.

“Will you be okay at the apartment without me?” I asked Finn.

“Yes.”

I waited to see if he had anything else to add, but he remained silent. I bit back my sigh. He was likely almost as upset as Isabeau at being sent back, but unlike her, Finn kept his feelings hidden. “Luna is going to go back with you,” I said.

“Jinx isn’t happy,” he said quietly.

“No.” I laughed. “Honestly, I’m surprised he’s not up there in the tree with Isabeau throwing a tantrum.”

A small tentative grin tugged at Finn’s lips, and I celebrated inwardly, then cursed as a large pinecone thumped onto my head. I rubbed the sore spot and glanced up in time to see another one fall off the branch. I stepped to the side and narrowly avoided another hit to the head.

Careful, valkyrie. Jinx’s voice grumbled in my head. Bad luck would be a terrible thing to have while wandering around in a dark cave.

The black grimalkin stalked off, and I stared after him. I hadn’t even known he’d been there. “Did you know he was behind us?” Finn’s grin blossomed into a smile, and I snorted while I ruffled his hair. “You’re definitely picking up some bad habits from these miscreants.”

“This is ridiculous!” Nemain snapped and stretched out her hand. The air to her right rippled slightly, and a gateway snapped into existence, revealing Magos and Mikhail waiting in the apartment. They both stepped through and lifted their gaze to where Isabeau sat. Magos raised his eyebrows while Mikhail just laughed quietly. “One of you is getting her down!” Nemain growled.

Magos smiled. “I think a solution will present itself momentarily.”

As if on cue, the front door to the apartment opened and Kaysea breezed in. The beautiful and sinfully curvy mermaid glided across the floor and joined us on the other side of the gateway. She didn’t even glance in Isabeau’s direction, but instead went straight to Finn and held out a plate full of cookies and cupcakes. “Zareen baked these this morning. Would you like one?”

Finn stared at the plate as he carefully debated which one to try.

Nemain snatched a cookie covered in some type of blue frosting off the plate and grinned as Kaysea scowled at her. “So did you just happen to swing by Zareen’s house this morning to pick these up? Or were you already there?” Nemain asked slyly.
